A lighthouse island full of stories. The Tankar lighthouse was first lit in 1889. Since that time, it has guided mariners toward the harbour of Kokkola 15 kilometres away. The lighthouse island of Tankar is full of stories, and you might imagine the rocky island larger than its 19 hectares. The island features a church, ornithological station and pilot station, and hundreds of fishermen could stay there at a time in the old days. According to many historical sources, the lighthouse was designed by the same Parisian agency that designed the Eiffel Tower. In fact, the Tankar lighthouse is the Eiffel of the Bay of Bothnia, since it is undoubtedly one of Finland’s most luminous lighthouses. You do not have to content yourself with admiring the landscapes lit by the beacon at ground level, since those with a touch of the daredevil can climb to the top of this functioning lighthouse. The coin series includes the Finnish metal circulation coins for 2013.
